Beartown State Forest is two distinctly different
places in summer and winter. During the warm months pristine 35-acre
Benedict Pond attracts swimmers, boaters and fishermen. Extensive
networks of trails offer visitors a chance to glimpse deer, bear,
bobcat, fisher and other wild animals who make the forest their
home. Brooks and beaver ponds are plentiful. The Appalachian
Trail intersects the forest's trails near Benedict Pond and
offers spectacular views.
The other half of the year the forest becomes
a winter wonderland, where visitors on cross-country skis, snowshoes
or snowmobiles can explore a snow-covered wilderness. The 1.5 mile
loop trail around the pond is a must in any season and campers are
welcome year-round.

Things to know before you go…
Beartown State Forest is open all year round for camping. The main
camping season is from mid-May to mid-October. Between October and
April campsites are available on a first-come/first-served basis.
Contact the park before departure to check weather conditions.

Park Directions
Beartown State Forest is located in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts.
From the Mass Turnpike (Rte. I-90): Take exit 2 to Rte. 102
west to
Rte. 7 south. Follow Rte. 7 to Rte. 23 east to Monterey (Blue Hill
Rd), then follow the brown signs.
