Monroe State
Forest |
Tilda Hill Rd., Monroe

In the wild and rugged Monroe State Forest there
are deep valleys, mountains unbroken by farms, and tall trees reaching
for the sky. Spruce Hill offers one of the most magnificent views
existing anywhere in the State. To view this landscape when the
valleys are filled with fog is an unforgettable experience. From
the parking area at River Road, the Dunbar Brook Trail follows a
pristine brook as it tumbles over huge moss-covered boulders forming
waterfalls, rapids and entrancing pools. Recreational opportunities
include hiking, fishing, snowmobiling and wilderness camping.
Many areas of the forest were cleared for agriculture
in the 1800s. The forest has reclaimed these fields and pastures,
but the cellar holes and stone walls remain; stark memorials to
the rugged individuals who wrested a living from the rocky soil.

Wilderness Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Horseback Riding Trails, Hunting (Restrictions), Scenic Viewing Area, Skiing (Cross-Country), Walking Trails.
