At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest peak
in Massachusetts. Acquired by the Commonwealth in 1898, it became
Massachusetts' first state park. Arriving at the summit by foot-trail
or auto road you may see a panorama of five states, visit the Veterans
War Memorial Tower, or relax in rustic Bascom Lodge which also offers
overnight accommodations
and meals. Here is a panoramic
view from the summit of Mount Greylock at dawn. The reservation
has over 70 miles of trails, including a section of the Appalachian
National Scenic Trail. The campground on Sperry Road offers
35 campsites
and 5 group campsites; reservations
are suggested in season. Also available are 5 remote trailside backpacker

Things to know before you go…
- The park is open from sunrise until dusk, year-round. Access
is free, however a $2 parking fee is charged for the summit lot
only. Handicapped, POW, Veteran plates and seniors 62 and above
with appropriate passes may park for free.
- Auto roads to the summit of Mt. Greylock
are open from mid-May through mid-October, 24 hours a day. The
roads remain open beyond mid-October during the hunting season,
and as long as weather permits safe driving conditions (please
call ahead).
- Snowmobiling is available once the road system
is closed to auto traffic for the winter, conditions permitting
(4-inch minimum hard-packed snow base). Snowmobiling
is permitted after sunset.
- Visitors Center
is open from 9am to 4pm daily, year-round, closed Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Years Day. Features info and exhibits.
- Veterans War Memorial Tower is open from
9am to 5pm daily from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, weekends only
mid to late-May.
- Bascom
Lodge is open from mid-May to mid-October.
- Campground on Sperry Road season runs
from mid-May to mid-0ctober, reservations
are suggested. The campground office hours are 8am to 10pm. Off-season
camping is first come, first serve. Note: Camping
fees apply as long as the auto roads remain open.
- Backpacker Shelters are first come, first served
and limited to 12 people. Tents are permitted in the immediate
area of shelter or on designated platforms.
Park Directions
Mt. Greylock is located in the northern part of western Massachusetts
From the east and west: Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Rte. I-90) to Exit 2 in Lee. Follow U.S Rte. 20 west to U.S. Rte. 7 north to Pittsfield for 11.8 miles. From downtown Pittsfield continue north on U.S. Rte. 7 to Lanesborough for 6.6 miles. At the the brown Mount Greylock sign turn right onto North Main Street. Follow the brown lead-in signs to the State Reservation; Visitors Center is 1.5 miles from Rte. 7. From the Visitors Center the Campground on Sperry Road is 6 miles and summit is 8 miles.
From Route 2 in North Adams, just west of the downtown, look for the brown Mt. Greylock Reservation sign on the left, heading west; or on the right, heading east. Turn onto Notch Road and follow 2.5 miles to reservation entrance. From Rte. 2 the summit is 8.5 miles and Campground on Sperry Road is 9.7 miles.
